Funding available for men seeking nipple tattoos
The Nipple Innovation Project (NiP) has announced new funding specifically for men who have undergone mastectomy surgery and are interested in receiving a specialist 3D nipple tattoo. The funding, made possible through a recent £5,000 donation, is expected to support between 15 and 20 men across the UK.
Many men affected by breast cancer are unaware that nipple tattooing is even an option following surgery. For some, it can be an important part of rebuilding confidence and feeling more comfortable in their body after treatment. For others, it may not be something they want or need. As NiP rightly points out, both choices are equally valid.
The Nipple Innovation Project provides realistic 3D nipple tattoos for people who have lost a nipple as a result of mastectomy surgery. The charity says it hopes this dedicated funding will help more men access the service and raise awareness of the support available.
What is a 3D nipple tattoo?
A 3D nipple tattoo is a specialist form of medical tattooing designed to recreate the appearance of a nipple and areola. Using colour matching and shading techniques, artists create a realistic visual effect on the skin.
NiP emphasises that there is no expectation for anyone to choose a nipple tattoo. Some men feel completely comfortable without one, while others view it as an important final step in their recovery journey.
Who can apply
According to NiP, applicants must:
Have experienced nipple loss following breast cancer treatment or preventative surgery
Be at least 12 months post-surgery
Have approval from their breast care nurse
Be a man, or have been assigned male at birth
The funding is available to men who have undergone mastectomy surgery as part of breast cancer treatment or preventative treatment following BRCA gene testing.
